Yesterday I ate the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers. Good riddance! Today was a new day that required fresh veggies. Luckily the HOPE Farmers Market was open despite it being a holiday weekend!
Located just east of downtown Austin at E. 5th and Waller, this market is a little different from others that I’ve been to. In addition to the farmer booths, there are a lot of artists and food/beverage vendors, and there’s always a live band playing. Sounds like fun, right?
While walking around, I got some great gift ideas, but it goes against my procrastinating ways to start Christmas shopping in November. Uh, yeah…Black Friday? No way.
Inside the HOPE Gallery, you can find lots of colorful artwork, including posters for the market. If clothes are more your thing, the Austin Clothes Exchange happens in here on the first Sunday of each month.
So I went there for veggies yet all you’re seeing is photos of arty things. I only saw one veggie vendor today, though it was a big one. My loot: green pepper, green onions, and cheddar cauliflower!
And no, cheddar cauliflower does not taste like cheese, though that would be pretty spectacular…

Austin, TX
“Open every Sunday 11am-3pm – rain or shine!”
I wish Hope had more veggies and fruit! It is the only market open at a reasonable time but it’s mostly stuff. Cool stuff! But I usually walk away with doughnuts and tacos and some token kale.
Oh my, so envious of seeing the people in the photos in shorts, shirt sleeves and tank tops! Our farmer’s markets are all but closed down now. Some are open, selling Christmas trees. Already looking forward to Spring and fresh local fruits and veggies:)
The HOPE market is still on my list to explore! And I’ve never even heard of cheddar cauliflower!!
lazysmurf – Me too! I think the new Mueller one is open at the same time/day, by the way. Token kale is hard to resist.
Paula – Not to make you more jealous, but ours are open year round! :)
Julie – I’m always happy to tag along! And I hadn’t heard of it until the JBG tour.
Now I want to come to Austin. Does it go year round? Our farmers market shut down a few weeks ago. Woe is me
Yep, they are open year round and there are a lot of them throughout the week! Much nicer to go this (or any) time of year rather than the blazing summer.
