I love really simple things that turn out to be really tasty. If you’re doubting the tastiness of this shake, fear not!
Yes, you would be drinking an avocado. Yes, it looks like liquid guac.
But the flavor is awesome!!
It’s kind of like an avocado got all up in your limeade and smoothed things out a bit. In fact, it reminds me of a mellow key lime pie – not too tart, not too sweet. The good thing is that this is much better for you!
Viscosity-wise (did I really just say that?), this is just like a smoothie. The lime juice and water thin it out.
This is supposed to make two servings, but that’s probably because the recipe says to pour it into two 8 ounce glasses full of crushed ice. Since I used a combination of water and ice in the shake, I poured it into an empty glass…which happens to be for margaritas.
Hey, if the shoe fits, right?
Avocado Lime Shake
barely adapted from Moosewood Book of Desserts
Moosewood said to use about 2 limes to get 1/4 cup of juice, but I used 3 and also ended up using a leftover lemon half I had on hand. What is it with limes this year?
1/2 ripe avocado
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
3/4 cup mix of water and ice
2 tablespoons sugar
dash of salt (optional)
Dump all of the ingredients into a blender and whirl until smooth. Garnish with lime, if desired!
I have a hunch that this would be super duper awesome with the addition of raspberries…just sayin’. (though the color might be a bit interesting…)
Also, I know it’s fall, but we still have loads of avocados here!

wow that is one of the most interesting smoothies ive ever seennnn!!
So I guess if I were being greedy and wanted to put a whole avocado in, it would just be all out of whack?
Nah…try it and just add more of the other things if it needs it. Plus, if you get one of those smaller avocados, I would just use the whole thing anyway.
I actually ate the other half for lunch with the rest of those baby tomatoes….then washed it down with this smoothie. Innuresting…
So creative! You always come up with the neatest ideas :) And I love the use of “viscosity-wise!”
PS–So cool that you used to live in Cleveland! We actually went to “Melt” last time I visited Katie, but the wait was so long (1 1/2 hours), I simply couldn’t wait :) We went to Aladdin’s this morning to pick up some pita after checking out the market (did you ever get one of the fresh-made crepes at the market? Holy Delicious!). Last night for dinner we went to Sweet Melissa’s (I think that’s what it was called) and I almost got lost in a food coma.
Have a great weekend!
Thanks! :)
Yeah, Melt is notorious for the waits. They opened a new location on the east side of Cleveland (close to where I lived), but I’ve heard the waits are still bad. No, I never did have the crepes! Bummer… I’ve also never heard of Sweet Melissa’s! There’s so much going on food-wise in that town. Ohh!! I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Corbo’s in Little Italy is famous for their cassata cakes. Even Mario Batali says they’re the best in the US! I looove their cannoli… Hope you’re having a good, tasty time. :)
what a fun recipe! I never thought to put an avocado in a smoothie. Wish they weren’t so expensive here!
Looks pretty amazing!
my sister would love this, i will make this for her soon. thank you for sharing:)
